What to expect from a Mini Session | Galway Family Photographer

by Siobhan Coyne | Jun 15, 2022 | FAMILY, NEWBORN

I know your biggest struggle, it’s time! You don’t have nearly enough of it, the days go by with the million tasks on your to-do list and each day, you feel time slipping by and you are not in the photos with your children. And you really want to do...

Your hands express what your heart already knows. Your hands express what your heart already knows.
I know they say the eyes are the window to the soul, but I feel equally hands are. They tell a story. They show your life's work, the years young and old. Their touch connects us. They have their own language.

Growing up, we were always fascinated with our Dad's hands. They were giant compared to ours. He had (and still does) hard, working hands full of scrapes and sometimes black nails from blood trapped underneath from all the knocks his hands took with labourer intensive work. We would kiss them better when he came home with yet another mark that told a story.

I gravitate towards hands every time I'm with people and my camera. They show me protection, safety, connection, warmth, trust, comfort and an open heart.

"Now join your hands, and with your hands your hearts" - William Shakespeare.

What story do your hands tell right now?

I look down at my hands and I see promise 💍 and wisdom 🦉

Sometimes, you just need a hug. We can all feel l Sometimes, you just need a hug. We can all feel like that sometimes right! But for a one year old, being windswept and frozen at the beach is not what he had in mind.

So, the comfort of mama's arms and the sweet sound of her singing a lullaby to ease his pain was all he needed.

I don't shy away from taking photographs during emotional moments, in fact quite the opposite. I very much lean into these moments and create a safe space for you to stay there as long as you need.

These moments are everything. They are your real life. They show your softness and strength as a mother and they show you the unconditional love from your child.

What is your Zone of Genius? Your superpower? Do What is your Zone of Genius? Your superpower? Do you know?

A book I have been reading recently (The Big Leap) asks the questions to get you out of your "Zone of Excellence" and into your "Zone of Genius". The thing you are really good at and that sets you apart and brings you joy.

You discover it by asking yourself what do you love to do that does not feel like work? What are some things that other people say you are good at? What is your unique ability?

The Zone of Excellence is something you're very good at and comes easy to you, so easy that it might feel like this is your genius zone. Yet it does not light you up or bring any joy. This was Accountancy for me. It was easy, I was good at it but it sure did not bring joy to my life.

While I'm not about to say that photography is my zone of genius because I don't think it is, I think my unique ability helps me be a better photographer.
Here is what I have discovered so far in my quest to uncover my Zone of Genius:

💫 I can make people feel very comfortable in my presence very quickly
💫 My brain works in equal parts left side: right side
💫 My mind is very fast and equally are my reflexes which means for photography, I don't miss moments! I can see a moment happen and in an instant the camera is to my eye and settings achieved to nail the shot.

Is that my thing I don't know yet but the journey of discovery and being curious about my unique talents and abilities sure is an interesting one.

How about you? Do you feel like the work you are currently doing is what you were meant to do? I'd love to know - below or drop me a DM.

I don’t want to take perfect photos. I’m not I don’t want to take perfect photos. I’m not here for everyone smiling at the camera perfect portrait.
I may set up a pose or prompt but then I wait for it all to fall apart and that’s when I click the shutter.

Thats what I mean by your moments, your story. As they are unique to you.
Because in those moments, you show who you truly are. Not perfect, just imperfectly beautiful.

Have you thought about the value of photography th Have you thought about the value of photography through their eyes?

Photography can show you the moment and the world from your child’s perspective.

Our lives can be so busy, running to do lists in our minds, the constant juggle and moments can just slip by without too much notice or taking stock of them.

Our children don’t need much, but what they do need is our time & attention. Not all of it all of the time, but our undivided, present moment awareness with them.

And what they give in return is pure joy that sometimes we actually cannot see. We can feel it but often cannot see it. Why? Because literally our vantage point is different.

This is one reason why photography is so valuable. It’s showing you these moments, these precious reactions and feelings expressed on their faces that you would miss altogether unless it’s captured for you.

And when you see it, you realise how much the moment…..the hug, the twirl, the tip upside down or the protective hand on their shoulder…..means to them. And you wouldn’t trade it for anything.

If we all could see the world through the eyes of a child, we would see the magic in everything. - Chee Vai Tang.

So, let me capture these moments for you. Book in your family session, outdoors or in-home and preserve moments like these for you for ever.

Always wait for the magic at the end.... D Always wait for the magic at the end....

Did you know, often the best moments and in turn photographs come towards the end of the session? Why? Because the further into a session we go, the more creative your photographer becomes and the more relaxed you are.

That is because, we have broken down the walls. The nerves you show up with (understandably) and the awkwardness that comes from having your photo taken. It's universal. But it does go away.

All of that starts to melt away as we get to know each other, as you begin to realise you can just soak in your people and that you can trust me.

Making space for and capturing connection takes more than just talent - it takes trust, creativity, and a shared vulnerability.

Creativity doesn’t wait for that perfect moment. It fashions its own perfect moments out of ordinary ones.” —Bruce Garrabrandt
